Teaching in a cyber school does not allow much face to fact contact with students. So, one way to develop a repoire with students would be to arrange a "field trip" of some sorts in the area.
Last year, our school held a trip at the Pittsburgh Science Center. We did take in the Sport Works as well. Although we did not get as many students to attend as planned, it was a successful outing nonetheless.
Next month, the PE department, along with select teachers, will be chaperoning dozens of elementary and middle school students at the Mellon Arena to take part of the Pittsburgh Penguins visit practice day. Interest in attending was fast and furious for students that age.
Our department, as mentioned on other blog posts, is planning on taking high school students to the Camp Guyasuta Ropes course next spring. Interest amongst the students part appears to be favorable with the previews given to them so far this school year.
We are also considering a YMCA invitational type of day as well, if we can find a cooperating facility.

I took my students on a field trip to the local boweling ally. It consisted of transportation, pizza and snacks, and all you can bowel for 3 hours. It was nice because they had a DJ and cosmic. The kids really enjoyed it. At the end of the day, I gave out a trophy to the students with the best scores. Overall the trip cost the students 5 dollars. The kids really like field trips at any age.
Field trips sound like great ideas when you have the right students and support from other teachers and administrators. I am having a tough time getting that because our PSSA scores are low. I want to take a trip to Camp Guasanta for Adventure PE class.
Oh yes!! I take my PE club on four trips every year. This is my third year and the club keeps growing...I love it :-)
Our first trip is a low ropes trip at SRU or Geneva College where the students participate in team building activities.
The second trip is at Slippery Rock's Recreation Center where they spend three hours in physical activity. One hour is swimming, one hour on the rock wall, and one hour at the courts and track. We split them into three groups and rotate them through each every hour.
The third trip is at Seven Springs for skiing, snowboarding, and/or snow tubing. This is a day trip, but we are going to try an overnight or weekend trip this year.
Our last trip in the spring is at Camp Konokwee.
Each trip is great and as long as the destination keeps them active, they love it... We have a great group of students every year and always receive compliments from staff that our group is well behaved.
It is great to see them enjoy physical activity so much, especially in a way that we can't offer them at the school. Always makes my day!!!

Wow, great responses. I can do some of these. Our biggest problem is getting students to the event. We prefer that they provide their own transportation to the site. That may not be so easy for some students, especially if they live too far away from the area.
Bowling, ropes courses, SRU ropes and Geneva team building activities are all worthy ideas. Thanks a bunch everybody for your submissions.
Can you give me information on Camp Guyastua Ropes Course? How much it cost students to go? Activities they can do? Ive never heard of this place before and would like any information possible. I have been looking into taking my students on a field trip where they can do rope activities. Anything will help. Thanks.
